The Path Into Medicine
Carpenter never planned to become a doctor or acupuncturist. She had her first daughter at 23 and soon became a stay-at-home mom, working only briefly between having her two daughters. Over the years, both daughters faced health issues that conventional doctors couldn’t diagnose or solve. Looking for answers, she turned to alternative and holistic health, which she says had a "profound effect" on her family’s health.
Her personal experience inspired her to earn a bachelor’s degree in alternative medicine. During her studies, she discovered Chinese medicine and acupuncture for the first time and says she fell in love with it, even though she had never wanted to be a doctor before. She realized that a bachelor’s degree alone wouldn’t allow her to treat or counsel patients directly, so she decided to pursue a Master’s-level acupuncture physician program.
She began the program in her mid-30s while raising two daughters who were competitive dancers. The training meant traveling to Sarasota several times a week, with some school days lasting 10 hours, plus 2,000 required clinical hours and externships. She graduated just one week before her 40th birthday, after nine years of academic work.
Credentials
- Fully licensed acupuncture physician in the state of Florida
- Nationally board certified
- Passed four board exams, including a Western medicine board in addition to her Chinese medicine boards
Why She Opened Her Own Practice
After passing her boards, Carpenter worked at another practice but had to travel for work and asked patients to drive up to 90 minutes to see her. She chose to open her own office in her community instead, calling it "another giant leap of faith." She started in a small room under 200 square feet with just her treatment table and desk, building her patient base there before moving to her current, larger space a little over a year ago.
What Alchemy Wellness Treats
Carpenter says many people are surprised by how many different conditions her practice treats. Common issues include:
- Headaches and chronic migraine conditions
- Anxiety, stress, and depression
- Insomnia
- Teen mental health and stress management
- Hormone imbalances
- Digestive issues
She notes that physical and psycho-emotional conditions are often connected. Treating one can often affect the other.
How Treatment Frequency Works
Treatment plans are personalized per patient, but Carpenter outlined general patterns:
| Acute/painful state | At least twice per week | Roughly 3–6 weeks |
| Maintenance phase | Every 2 weeks, or once a month | Ongoing, based on patient preference |
She emphasizes that starting acupuncture does not mean you have to commit for life. However, many patients choose to continue with maintenance treatments because of how they feel.
Her Approach: Blending Western and Eastern Medicine
Carpenter challenges the idea that acupuncture is only an "alternative" or informal practice. Her approach includes:
- Western diagnostic tools: lab testing and hormone testing
- Traditional Chinese medicine principles and acupuncture
- Herbal medicine and supplements in place of pharmaceuticals
- Lifestyle and diet changes
She chose the name Alchemy Wellness because "alchemy" means combining two different things to create something new. In her practice, this means blending Western diagnostic knowledge with what she describes as thousands of years of Chinese medicine wisdom. She also mentions Ayurvedic medicine as a philosophy that fits well with this approach, since both traditions focus on treating each patient as an individual instead of using one-size-fits-all methods.
She does not prescribe pharmaceuticals. Her goal with each patient is to "let your body remember how to work properly" by using supplements, herbs, and lifestyle changes instead of just covering up symptoms with medication.
Additional Services
Beyond acupuncture, Alchemy Wellness currently offers:
- In-house massage therapy (via a licensed massage therapist who works in a more medical/therapeutic style rather than purely relaxation-focused)
- Functional lab testing
- DUTCH testing (hormone testing)
- Food sensitivity testing
- A patient portal for ordering supplements
- Mail-order herbal medicine
Carpenter says she is considering adding telehealth consultations. This would let her offer counseling, order lab tests, and ship supplements or herbs to patients outside the Carrollwood area. However, hands-on acupuncture would still require an in-person visit.
Payment and Access Options
Alchemy Wellness offers several ways for patients to manage the cost of care:
- Payment plans
- Treatment packages/memberships
- HSA account acceptance
- Third-party financing company partnerships
- VA Community Care Network coverage for veterans
Regarding veteran care, Carpenter became a certified VA provider, a process she says took about eight months of steady work. Eligible veterans with a Community Care Network referral can receive treatment at no cost.
Patient Communication
Carpenter gives her patients direct text-message access for scheduling, supplement questions, and general support. She usually puts her phone on do-not-disturb after a certain hour, but has personally answered patient texts as late as 10:30 p.m.
A Patient Outcome She Cites
As an example of her impact, Carpenter describes a patient who had migraines almost every day for two years. After two acupuncture treatments, the migraines became occasional instead of daily. Carpenter says the patient, who is also a business owner, had been unable to read emails on her computer because of the migraines but was later able to return to working at full capacity in her business.
Community Involvement
Carpenter is a member and current director of the Carrollwood Area Business Association (CABA), a local business networking group in Tampa. She joined CABA right after opening her practice and has served as a board director for the past year, with plans to run again. She credits CABA with helping her business grow and supporting her personal development, saying that networking, mentorship, and referrals from the group have been key to her practice’s success.
Her Advice for New Entrepreneurs
Asked what advice she'd give to new women entrepreneurs, Carpenter offered two main points:
- Keep showing up every day, even if you do not see results right away. She remembers months early on when she made almost no income but kept showing up, promoting, and networking consistently.
- Be careful about who you let into your inner circle. She suggests keeping a small, trusted group to share your goals, ideas, and setbacks with, instead of telling everyone your plans. She believes this group will be a "make or break" factor in keeping your momentum during tough times.
